    The Leaf: The Food Factory

Identify plant parts and understand how they work together to sustain life.

1.0 The Building Blocks of a Plant

Plants are complex living organisms. Every part of a plant works like a specialized team member to help it grow, breathe, and reproduce.

    Parts of a Plant Diagram

Figure 1: The 5 Main Parts - Roots, Stem, Leaves, Flowers, and Fruits.

    2.0 Roots: The Underground Anchors

The root is the part of the plant that usually grows hidden beneath the soil.

Radicle: The "baby root" inside a seed that emerges first during germination.

2.2 Three Main Types of Roots

    • Tap Root: One thick main root (Primary) with smaller branches.
      Examples: Mango, Tomato, Gram.
    • Fibrous Root: A cluster of thin, equal-sized roots from the stem base.
      Examples: Wheat, Rice.
    • Adventitious Root: Roots growing from branches or leaves instead of the radicle.
      Example: Banyan Tree (Prop Roots).
    Root Types

3.0 The Stem: The Plant's Highway

The stem connects the roots to the leaves, acting as a transport system for water and nutrients.

    Aerial Stems

Visible above ground. Includes Tendrils (climbing) and Thorns (protection).

    Underground Stems

Hidden storage units like Potatoes (Tubers) and Ginger (Rhizomes).

4.0 The Leaf: The Food Factory

Leaves are green because of Chlorophyll, and they are the primary site for making food.

Venation: The pattern of veins on the leaf lamina.
    Feature Reticulate Parallel
    Pattern Net-like veins Straight, side-by-side
Root Type Tap Root Fibrous Root

    5.0 How Plants Live

    The Photosynthesis Recipe:

    CO₂ + Water + Sunlight + Chlorophyll → Carbohydrates + Oxygen
    Stomata:

Tiny pores on the leaf bottom for breathing. Controlled by Guard Cells.

    Transpiration:

The "sweating" of plants. It cools the plant and helps pull water from roots.
